Up-Cycling Old Jeans

Crafty Mama's had an upcycling jeans challenge The use an old pair of jeans to make something new. Well being the B.T.S. time of the year again I decided in my wisdom (not) to make a pencil case. Well I quickly found out that jeans are put together TOUGH!!! So I back pedalled and decided to use as many of the existing features of the jeans as possible. I still had some tough unpicking to do but not as much! I used existing back and front pockets and the waistband and tabs. I used some rainbows End Print as the lining and the contrast panels , I inserted a zip and added a magnetic catch as using the waistband made the top opening really deep. Making sure I got all the fabric around the zip, both in the lining and the outer cover was a challenge. I ended up hand stitching it on, then machine top sewed for strength. Molly wanted to take it to TAFE to show her friends so she could take orders for me. That met with a resounding NO! I don't want to make anymore. So I guess its mine.

New Tute Non Slip Non Crappy Mousemat!

Well Its been awhile since I have added anything to my blog. Not that I have been slack in doing stuff its just that I have been slack in blogging about it!
I have been sewing stuff up for artists markets and the artist co-op and having been teaching myself to make patterns in illustrator! Well I started off with Autocad under the instruction of my very I.T. competent son, however I found it painful to use but I used that small amount of knowledge of using cad drawing to teach myself to use Illustrator. I found it fun and even mathematically challenged me! can use it!
I have drawn up a pattern for my frilled tote bag it and a tute will be available for sale for a small price (hey a girl has to make a living) very soon In the meantime I have a couple of freebees to give away;
The first is a simple mousepad I know anyone can draw a square but if your lazy and math challenged like me you prefer a pattern! Plus it makes it easier to make multiples identically. I have done a pattern and tute for a pencil and crayon roll they will be posted very shortly as well There are a lot of tutes availble for these and I made my first one following this lovely ladies tute I made more than one so having to measure up all the time was a pain so I made the pattern!

A Good Day in the Studio

I have an arts council stall this weekend and have been asked also to put some of my work in a local artists co-operative. So I have been busy in my newly rearranged studio whipping up some fabrics At first it was not going so well I found some of my older screens and block prints while I was rearranging the stdio space and wanted to use them with my sun-printing. In the past these images were used in conjunction with different dye backgrounds and some were from past bodies of work of varied themes. I guess the differences threw me for a little while and I seemed to be making some awful image and colour choices. However after a coffee the creative instinct kicked in and I fixed things!!! These are the results and i am very happy with them I loved using the block prints again after so long I think I will have to cut some more and after stepping over my chooks all morning to print I decided I needed to draw them and put them on a screen or block to play with

Remember those disperse (polysol) dyed buttons? Well here is a little project I just whipped up with a headband I made and some of those buttons!

Go to my tute page to see how to dye them I found the tute for the flowers in a magazine Its just a matter of using a really good glue, Craft or hot glue gun Glue them to a felt backing and hand stitch with clear thread for extra strength. If you accidently glue over the holes it does not take too much pressure to get the needle through Be sure to leave the flower undisturbed for 24 hours to let the glue harden completely

I'm having fun printing ,dyeing and making up patterns for bags Frills are all the go So I made this one I showed you last week Its made from homespun an is suitable as an everyday tote.
So this week I decided to make something more for evening I sunprinted some polyester made up the cascades and rolled hemmed the edges I then used purple satin as the main body There is sunprinted satin in it too

I have moved Yayy!! We are finally settled in our lovely new cottage and I have been busy setting up my creative spaces. I have my sewing area, two printing spaces and two places for painting and designing. Well, we have found, its such a great town lots of vibrant markets and creative people My daughter Molly and I are headlong into production we plan to have a market stall in a couple of months or so. I am into fabric dyeing and printing in full swing and am making some of it into upmarket bags such as this little number. It has an interior change pocket as well as a small pocket for your mobile phone. Molly loves it and I'm hoping it will appeal to the teen age group.

I am in the process of making downloadable pdf patterns and tutes for my bags they will be able soon for a very small price and I also am producing cd's to sell from our stall. I have started a new tutorial page on this blog I have just uploaded the instructions for the very funky process of dyeing buttons I will be using these as embellishments on some of my bags and Molly has been using them to produce some very stunning Jewelry Go and check it out they are just gorgeous! Happy Birthday to Me :)

Today is my 55th Birthday Wow 40 years ago I never considered what it would be like to get to here Now I am I don't feel any older well that is stretching it a bit because after five kids a divorce and two failed relationships guess I really am 55. For the people who personally know me they know that this has been one hell of a year for me, one I never want to go through ever again Today marks the end of that time for me and the beginning of a new chapter, In a few short weeks the girls and I are heading on our way to Darwin , forever the gypsy I will make towards our northern shores to the place I love best in this country and to a new life.

Getting back to the birthday I have been spoiled my children gave me these lovely presents this morning Well Molly, Naomi and darling granddaughter Lila did. My Siani is cooking me a birthday cake for her gift to me and I got loving daughter hugs all round Molly gave me the lovely ladybird tea service Lila a lovely glass box with a silver gecko on it (Just right for my Motherpeace tarot cards) Naomi gave me the most beautiful pewter key with a fairy on it On the box is inscribed;
In a glade within the woods
there is a place that may be found
at a certain time
on a special day you may
discover it, so they say
a secret garden hidden so well
that only the fairies know
where to dwell
so use this key and keep a close eye
so that maybe one day
you'll find where they play
This is so delightful I am going to use it as a key ring for my new home in Darwin.

Another Birthday Goodie I got last night was my cushion cover from the Punky and Me 2011 Cushion swap
I absolutely love this cushion it is so bright and cheerful It came across the pond from New Zealand from Greta from ON TOP OF A LILY PAD blogspot. I cant believe its the first cushion cover she has ever made and although she says the small floating heart is to cover a blemish ion the fabric I love it from a design angle All the best designs are born of a need to be inventive. Thank you Greta How lucky am I to get this in time for my birthday

Oh Crap!! My catchphrase ATM

The last couple of months have been full on for me so much happening its hard to keep track of the days and events So When Vic emailed me on Monday and said it was posting day for the cushion cover swap over at Punky and Me. I said "Oh Crap!" Mind you my cover was made sewing and dyeing and printing have been my refuge from the madness! But living so far out of town meant I had to wait to the next day to post it! Anyway yesterday I happily expressed posted it and scribbled a hasty note (apologies) to my swappee, The guy at the post office must have been in the same addled frame of mind as me for today I received my receipt and tracking number in the mail (he forgot to give it to me) or maybe my addledness was infectious! Today I realized I did not take a pic and went "Oh Crap!" again

So I have gathered some of the left over patches and offcuts and made a composite to show It does not resemble the finished design but at least you can see the colours and prints all the fabric is homespun that I sun coloured and screen printed I used a Seminole patchwork technique to put it all together and must say its conception and construction gave me great pleasure I truly hope the recipient enjoys it too Thank you for the opportunity to take part and despite my scatterbrained actions I had a ball!

I have finished two altar/table runners for Samhain Celebrations. It's coming up to that turn in the Wheel of the Year here in the Southern Hemisphere I have also made two for Marbon as well I will be releasing them into The Gypsy Caravan later Tonight Yule is next on my list , but I thought that I might make some for our Northern neighbours and play with some Beltane images

Harvest Moon

I have been playing with new images based on Mabon and the change of seasons I am really pleased with this piece of fabric I completed this morning. I printed it using a corn dolly (Made from wheat stalks) a Harvest Moon , St Bridgid's Cross and small wheat stalks These are not my usual colours of choice to print with but I loved the mixing of the autumn tones and the way it all came together. I have decided I'd like to do some more based on the Wheel Of the Year theme Samhain is next and the images and colours of this spoke will be another step away from my usual palette

This fabric was created for a special purpose so has been earmarked to go off somewhere other than The Gypsy Caravan However as soon as the Autumn Sun shows itself here again I will sun dye some more to print and add to my store.

Spoonflower Swatches Arrive

Well after what seems to be an eternity my fat quarters of the Miss Rose's fabric from Spoonflower finally have made their appearance They look OK however the wording on two of them seem to be a little fuzzy I am not sure why Maybe I need to pay closer attention in Photoshop It was exciting to have them finally turn up it seems such a long process. Now what to make? Any Suggestions? I think I will make my motifs smaller and closer together in subsequent designs it really is hard to judge until they are finally printed. Of course doing a print on paper may have shown me this but II was my usual self and in one hell of a hurry to dash something off.

The time involved in the ordering and finally receiving is a bit off putting considering the price of the fabric However I have a new grandson due in June and I think I would like to do some designs especially for him. Something that would be too time consuming for me to do by hand printing

Molly's Foofy

In reading the Crafty Mamas Forum last week I found reference to this http://yarnsinthefarms.com/intheloop/?p=121 The skirts looked so good I wanted to try to make one plus the cooler weather has really inspired me to knit lately. So I looked through my stash of yarns and found I had a variety of different types feather, boucle and others I also managed to buy some odds n ends from the op shop. I had to buy some round needles and I had trouble getting the size I needed I paid and downloaded the instruction from Yarns in the Farms but I adjusted things along the way. I did the tension test Knitted a swatch with some yellow machine washable 100% yellow 12 ply. I measured Molly's waist ( sigh so tiny) It said measure how many stitches in a cm and x it by that to get the number of stitches to cast on 66cm = 132 stitches, Anyway I knitted this on the straight for a few cm's When I had to use a smaller ply I knitted two yarns together ie; I mixed an 8 ply with a 4 ply Also If I had to use a synthetic thread I made sure I used a wool combined with it . I think if I was the the whole thing in a laundry bag it should be ok as the wool I used stated it was machine washable.Then decided to add a flounce as the needles I started with were only a 4 and my larger round were a 12 There was a considerable difference in the tension So I only increased every 10 stitches for a couple of rows and thought the flounce was wide enough. I cast off very loosely and as I found the tension difference in the 12 ply was very loose with the needle size changeover I threaded a ribbon through that row for extra effect

I threaded a black ribbon through the holes in the waist rib and threaded some glass beads on the ends I have to say Molly loves it and was very happy to show it off

Gangsters at Boonooroo

Last Night May 22nd Boonooroo Bowls Club hosted a theme night Gangsters and Mafia This so far has been one of my favourite nights I had the loveliest time sourcing costumes for the family in op shops and making myself a 1920's style dress complete with long gloves feather boa and headdress. My daughter Molly went as Machine Gun Molly a famous bank robber from the fifties My daughter Sian and her Brother Matt were general mob members. They all had a theme of black and red I didn't plan it that way but it seemed everything I found for the costumes fitted that colour scheme. Just great Luck! My partner Troy was the official Machine gun man he mad great machine guns out of bits of pipe and wood an painted them black Originally they all had adult owners apart from Molly's However they were quickly snapped up by all the kids at the club and were a wonderful source of play for them for the rest of the night Of course we had our resident muso James Taylor ( Yes the James Taylor!) We are lucky enough to have him play at our clubs theme nights as he lives locally

Exhibition in Maryborough

I was invited on May 10th to see an exhibition by a group of Maryborough artists and craftspeople who make the most amazing sculptural dolls I was permitted to take photos so I have made a small slide show in the previous post to highlight some of their lovely work All the dolls are impeccably made with great artistic flair and attention to detail.

Indigo dyeing is extensively practiced in Asian countries It is the colour of choice for farmers and princes alike What better choice of image to print over a beautiful Shibori dyed fabric than a wonderful buddhist blessing and a golden Mandalas This fabric is a 100% Colorado stretch knit Its a quality fabric suitable for easy sew garments. It is named "Sacred Indigo" and can be found in my Congo Store

Indigo The Queen of Dyes

Lack of Sunshine and a few other disruptions to my studio have meant that sun printing is not an option right now. So I have revisited my old friend "Indigo" This is my very favourite dye to use on its own or combined with other dye types Indgo is indeed the reigning Monarch. In the old world of Asia, and Africa natural indigo was used and indeed in many provinces is still today. I had a lovely time back in 1992 visiting all the tiny provinces in Thailand where this dye stuff is the life blood of the artisans Whole villages were developed around one type of craft, dyeing, basket making, pottery , paper making and many more. The visits to the indigo and weaving villages were my favourite. It was incredible to watch the women and men tying the threads for Ikat weaving I have never seen hands move so fast in my life Then to watch these tiny intricate patterns emerge on the weaving loom was nothing short of amazing.

Anyway I had better stop rambling my in indigo pieces I have used Shibori The Japanese term for tie dye and then I will print on some of the pieces. I have completed one small half metre of homespun with my honeyeater design

Seems like a long while since I have posted or even printed School Holidays my beginning a new relationship and some medication woes concerning my daughters Autism all contributed to a slight hiccup in the flow of things However I'm back!

I recently purchased some lovely Colorado 100% cotton knit suitable for tops t's and any other projects requiring a good quality stretch cotton. I have completed two and added to the shop I have another on the table I am planning to print more Koi on that I intend to purchase some more tomorrow and complete a couple more next week Anyway pop in and have a look at my shop and also check out the lovely bargains other wonderful Crafty Mamas have in their stores!

Last of the Lycra

This is the very last piece of the special buy lycra I had it is only 56 cm I have just listed it to my Congo Cart at the special price of $10.00 normally I would charge $12.00 to $15.00 for printing a half metre but I had a slight misprint on a tiny turtle in one corner easy to cut around and it is enough to make a top or a child's dress as it is 150cm wide. I am planning to make a bulk order of Stella from Crafty Mama's Shop when I have enough $ saved. It is quite a lot dearer than what I paid for the lycra I had and I was wondering if people would be willing to pay $30 a metre If I dyed and printed it? It is what I would have to charge to make it worth my while.

Screen Printing Heaven

A big thank you to all those lovely Crafty Mamas who have been buying my fabric Not since Uni have I had the glorious excuse to print metre after metre of fabric and indulge my passion for playing with designs and all those beautiful colours For me printing is the most lovely occupational therapy I could indulge myself in I am never so happy than when I am surrounded by pots of colour falling over screens and wiping printing ink in my hair (Yep I'm a messy worker, But I am meticulous on the textile) I just trash my surroundings!

I have been making new screens and here is the first fabric I have finished It is 2 generous metres of medium weight twill 100% cotton I have called it Tiny Turtles in the EAC I will post them to my congo shop when I have finished the other fabrics I am printing I have a new goldfish design and some Buddhist prayers to print too. I just love the look of the script in these lovely blessings

Not your Usual Softie!

Well I have made my softie for the 12 in 12 Challenge at Carolyns My Favourite Blog. She is a doll but not your usual softie doll She is a soft sculpture that is part of my body of work I am doing for my Masters in Visual Art. I have this year to complete and it will be the end of that journey. She has been machine embroidery (free Motion) I used my treadle for this because it is the best free motion machine I have ever used and because the physical activity of treadling seems to breathe a life into the embroidery. I have a blog to document my last days of my journey with the masters and my dolls.

I screen printed the fabric for the lower frill on Sian's Bell bottoms, I printed the peace sign on her t-shirt and was lucky enough to pick up the satin vest with the music notes at an op shop She looked totally cool and is still wearing the t-shirt and vest around this morning!

I decided to make a poodle skirt as the local club is having a Rock and Roll night next weekend I made it for Molly The thought of expanding backside further with all that petticoats was not an attractive vision. I made the skirt with fleecy it was the closest thing I could find as an inexpensive alternative to felt. Felt is what they were usually made of in the 50's. I screen printed on the poodle and used a piece of beaded ribbon so kindly sent to me by Gem in the February stash swap! The belt is made from some black block out it is plastic backed and very sturdy I inserted some eyelets and threaded it with black ribbon. The underskirt is made from a layered white skirt I found in the oppie I just added ruffles of tulle I also found in the oppie I am so glad I have a lovely ruffle foot It came with my Singer 222k Featherweight. However I find it easier to use on my trusty treadle! The collared top so typical of the 50's also came from the oppie! A perfect find ! Because of all the oppie finds the whole thing cost a grand total of $9.00 I just now have to dye a silk bandanna for her to tie around her neck! Sian has ordered a 60's hippie chick outfit so I had better get moving on that now!

February Knit Challenge

Here is my finished project for the February Knit Challenge I actually finished it two weeks ago and the outfit was for Sian However she refused to model for me So I finally got Molly to agree to a photo shoot I have made it from dyed stockingette which is 100% rayon knit It is a beautiful fabric and I actually sell it from my website

for crafty people to dye and print It is a beautiful fabric very inexpensive fully manufactured in Australia It has a lovely drape and is cool and light to wear. I dyed it first with a direct dye then I printed the humming birds and butterflies on it The humming birds have been hand coloured with diluted sun print dyes They are very versatile and can be used just for painting on fabric One does not have to always process them in the sun They are simply fixed by ironing . This dress was inspired for the Chinese New Year I used the little toggle buttons at the neck as a decoration and on the back as buttons. They were sprayed with purple sun print so they would match the dress.

We had a successful day Sun Printing at Boonooroo On Sunday 22nd February The weather seemed a little dicey on the day before so I set up alternative processing lights just in case we need to use them Thankfully after one small shower of rain we had wonderful sunshine and were able to continue the fun

Five ladies attended two painters a quilter, a scrap booker, and a graphic designer. They worked on a variety of media including, canvas, fabric, paper, wood and acetate We had a lovely shared lunch lots of lively conversation and altogether had a very inspiring and satisfying day

Some of the ladies have asked me to teach them screen printing in a couple of months That should be a good workshop too.

Is it TuTu Much?

When my lovely daughter spotted some crystal organza in a fabric shop, she asked "Mum could you please make me a TuTu?"
Molly suffers Aspergers and has been the subject of bullying all her life, so I was a little worried at making her something that was so different to what most 13 year olds wanted to wear. My 12 year old just snorted and said "don't you dare make me one!" Molly loves pretty things and just loves to dance I knew the locals at the bowls club where we go to dance and socialize on weekends would be supportive They just love Molly and are in awe of her dancing skills. So for a week I was immersed in mountains of frothy frills while I endeavored to work out how to make this. I found a whole lot of fabric in my stash that I could use including the yellow satin, which I promptly screen printed my butterflies on in blended colours.I had no real pattern so had to work it out as I went .
I adapted the bodice from a 70's dress pattern that I had making it longer and adding the lacing and tulle at the back

The ruffles were made from the organza and some small pieces of yellow tulle that I already had I edged the tulle with satin ribbon to give it a nicer finish.
Thank god for my ruffler attachment or I would never have attempted this! It made life easier!
I made a sash from the organza to go around the hips attached by small loops
Finally I luckily had and off cut of yellow lycra I made the tights with and used some of the yellow satin to make the ties on the legs.

Molly loves it and can hardly wait to wear it to the Valentines Dance at the club next week end!

Reusable 5cm drafting paper

How to make your own 5cm Reusable Drafting Graph Paper

This is a simple idea to make drafting paper that you can write on with a white board marker and wipe clean to use over and over again.

Recently at the oppie I came across a beautiful book Little Clothes for Little People by Lia van Steenderen Printed in 1987 by Exley.

The book cost me all of two dollars and was full of gorgeous children’s clothes patterns

displayed, via 5cm grids.

Now for the dilemma, apart from the fact I could not buy grid paper in that size locally and after paying such a low amount for the book I was not in the mood to pay for a stack of paper. I certainly did not want to go to the bother to draw up a grid for every pattern piece either (Not on my list of favourite things to do!).

So got the old grey matter churning and purchased a roll of contact. I actually bought two, one was marked with squares and numbers and lots of writing on the back; however the other one was marked in red squares only in blocks of 45 x 50 cms Perfect!

Number the small squares across the top and down the sides of the paper It will make it easier to rule up.

5 x5 of these red squares make a 5cm block
Rule up your squares in a contrasting pen colour

Cut another piece of contact 45cm x 51 cm. Allow your self a little extra to line up the plastic with your paper base.

Use a ruler to help adhere the contact evenly to the paper a few small creases make very little difference so don’t panic if your first one is not perfect. Trim any excess contact at the edges.

Draw up your pattern piece

Trace off your pattern
You can use tracing
Paper I actually use
vilene I find it more durable

Wipe clean and start again with the next piece

These are so quick and inexpensive to make. Make up at least 4 and you can sticky tape them together to draw up larger patterns.
Also they just roll up and store in a draw until you need them

I am going to make up a whole lot of those lovely patterns Hope this helps you too

Sometimes when you are doing art work drawing, painting printing a piece of work begins to "sing" and becomes something that makes you go "ooooohh!"
This piece of fabric did that for me the moment I lifted the sun print stencil it made my heart flutter I think the gorgeous citrus yellow and orange that it is and the way the sun printed undulated, fading in and out in intensity throughout the 2 metres. The colours don't show up that well in the photo They are rich and full in real life. As a thank you to the Mamas that have supported me so wholeheartedly in my printing ventures I have decided to make this a giveaway. Just leave me a comment I will draw the winner on February 1st. Ok Yay! I have completed January's Meme challenge and made something for myself I really needed a couple of aprons for two purposes One for Sun and screen printing Because I have a very bad habit of ruining my clothes and one for cooking The printing apron (Blue and white gingham) is made from Mexican oil cloth A plastic coated cloth which I purchased from the Crafty Mamas Shop! Wonderful stuff for projects like this. The pink one is for cooking and is made from two tea towels I purchased a cheap bulk pack of linen tea towels last week and picked the two prettiest I added the circled pattern tea towel at the front because I purchased a wonderful Christmas apron from an op shop that had a tea towel like this I love it It is so handy for drying your hands on or the odd spoon while you are cooking. The ties for this apron I also found an idea from a blog somewhere It is one continuous piece threaded through open ended side seams This is great for me as my girls tend to use my aprons too and tie the neck up in undo able knots (Their busts are not as generous as mine) So this is great! it adjusts to the wearer!

Trialing a Buy It Now Button!

After the successful selling spree I had the other night with the very supportive Crafty Mamas I realise my paypal cart on my site was not really supporting one off sales very well. I went into panic mode becuase every time my email registered a sale I had to go into the site management and remove the item manually I was terrified I would get orders in multiples for one off pieces So I temporary closed my site until I can sort out the problem. I have one piece of the 100% cotton lycra left and I thought I would trial a buy it now button on here. If this works I may use it in my online store Otherwise I am going to save my one offs for sales through the Crafty Mamas Congo store that is starting up in February. The rainbows Store will be back online today with Sun Print Dyes and the undyed stockingettes only. I still have a few of the small homespuns for sale however I may save them for the Congo Store If anyone is really keen before then contact me on the email form at the bottom of this blog and I will work something out.

This is a print I did on 100% rayon stockingette It is a beautiful fabric I am going to sell from my site in its natural state as well as lengths I have printed It is a wonderful economical fabric 100% produced in Australia

Creative Every Day Challenge 1st Posting Week 1

Ok for the 1st week of this challenge I have indeed been busy I have Sun printed and screen printed some more fabric with my Mandala Designs. The pic is of some 1 metre lengths of cotton Lycra I will upload these to my online shop most likely on Wednesday. I have also completed some lengths of rayon and rayon/cotton stockingette. I most likely will upload these too Unless I decide to make something for myself from them. I have been drawing up more mandala designs and some new images to expose to silk screens however I had to order some new emulsion to process these as my current stuff is getting a little past it.
So far for Carolyn's meme I have had some fabric sitting by my machine for the past week Tomorrow I have promised myself I will start it.

Creative Every Day Challenge

I joined This Challenge I am creative everyday anyway Would not be me if I did not do at least one creative thing a day, this is the directions on the blog about it;

A new range of the designer textiles I have been printing in the last few days are now available at The studios online shop Come pick up a bargain on one off designer textiles

Textiles are only available in 104cms x 50cms at the moment. They are perfect for that special project or make up into two fat quarters for quilters. However I plan to upgrade my facilities over the next couple of days so I can print 1 and 2 metre lengths I am also in the process of printing up some lovely Indigo fabric I busy constructing a tute on how to dye with Indigo I hope to have this up in the next couple of weeks

Printing Up a Storm!

Or in one? Its been so hot and steamy lately but I managed to get some printing done despite the rain. I had to rig up an exposure light to make myself some new screens as the last few days have been devoid of sunlight. I have been playing around with some mandala designs I like the look of the way they print so I may make up some more.

i have decided to sell these hand prints from my studio site so stay tuned for some changes in the studio shop soon. Each piece is hand-dyed then free screened I used single motif screens and place them were the urge takes me So each piece is composed just like a painting No two pieces of the fabric are ever the same each is unique and individual in its own right Its own piece of original art.

I am going to print up some other dyed lengths including a stash of indigo I have made in the past These will be available in one and two metre lengths The sun-coloured ones are only available in 50cms because of my current facilities which will change in the near future Then I plan to do larger pieces. Humm.... prices? probably about$12 to $15 per 50 cm They are on quality homespun 100% cotton and extra for postage Anyway stay tuned an announcement will be made as soon as they are available in the shop!

This is Molly's halter top I made using the Treadle Butterfly The fabric is from the op shop as is the pattern I used I adapted the pattern from one printed in 1977. Molly loves it! I also added some sequins and beads to the embroidery

I have had my nose to the grindstone lately making new clothes for my girls for Christmas I have had a wonderful time making them from op shop off cuts and using beautiful 70's patterns also from the op shop!

a couples of weeks ago right in the middle of a sewing frenzy we had a huge storm and lost power for about 6 hours So I dragged out my old Singer treadle and got it going. I have been having a wonderful time researching how to use it on the net ever since and working out and trialling all the strange feet included. In my travels I found a utube tube video of a lady using the treadle for machine embroidery so I decided to give it a go. To my absolute delight I found it the best machine I have ever used in free motion embroidery. It has the ability to layer the thread over and over itself with the most amazing ease. Since my old Elna lotus died I have not found a modern machine to do this with protest!

Anyway here is the result

This is halfway through I used a dissolving wash bag I wanted an unattached image

This one is the completed butterfly after a few wonderful hours of creating! Just like painting with thread

And here I have dissolved the bag and placed the butterfly on the fabric I am going to use to make Molly a top I am going to feature the butterfly in the centre of the front yoke May even ad a sparkle or two!

Happenings at the Rainbow cafe

Members at the cafe now total 25 and growing this is terrific to see. I am going to post a few topics in the forum to encourage people to interact and also will designate a specific chat time! To enable members to know when others may be online.

I have been working hard in my studio over the last week, in between hospital and doctors visits for my daughters! My eldest daughter and her baby Lila ( my only grandchild) visited us over the last two weeks. It was great to see them I took the opportunity while they were here to create a new product Babee Wings tops. I have listed the resulting creations on Etsy and Madeit.

I decided to brighten my chances of being noticed amongst the cast of thousands in those online stores by vamping up my presentation images. I used Lila as my model and scrapped a page to showcase the tops!

The cafe and my blog will be running a new competition in the next week or so The prize will be a trial set of suncolour, I would love to spread the word about this wonderful new medium and its lovely effects and applications I thought this would be one way to do it!

Cake in a Stocking! Personalized christmas gift to make!

Welcome to my tute on how to make a very personalized fun Christmas gift you can get the kids to help with!

I have made a file you can download that includes a full size pattern to trace off for the stocking, a tag to print off and a recipe instruction sheet to include with the gift.

Pattern is found on this link

1. cut out two pieces of fabric for the stocking you made include a collar if you wish as I have done on mine. Alternatively you could make one in felt and get the kids to glue decorations on to the front of it. The picture on the left shows two I have made in satin. Sew a small loop of ribbon

onto the inside seam at the top of the stocking with an over stitch This will give you something to attach your tag to.

2. When your stocking is complete , Slide an open feezer or zip lock bag onto your hand and slide it into the stocking.

Try to make sure you get as far into the toe as possible.

3. Stand your stocking on a bowl and add the dry ingredients. Its great to get the kids to help here Gives them practice in measuring;

4 Add; 1 cup of self raising flour

3/4 cup of white sugar

1/4 cup of soft brown sugar

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp cinnamon

3 tbls cocoa powder

Remove as much air from the remainder of the bag as possible. Tie the top of the bag with a twist tie or seal if using a zip lock and fold down into the stocking

This makes up a lovely moist cake when it is added to the other ingredients that are listed on the recipe sheet it also can be varied substituting coffee for the cocoa You may adapt your own cake if you wish, Just leave out the wet ingredients and include them on your own version of the instruction sheet....Hint.... I found using vanillin sugar a good alternative for the essence in a dry mix

5. Attach your tag to the top loop of the stocking , roll your instrcution sheet up and tie with tinsel and slide inside the stocking keeping it in place with the plastic dry mix bag.

This is another page for my Mum's birthday This day in 1999 was the last my parents spent together They had been divorced for over 30 years The day was special they still had the same smiles they had on their wedding day Many memories were shared My Mother had never stopped loving my Dad and she was so happy that I took him to visit her that day. Mum passed March 10th 2003 and Dad on Feb 4th 2005 I know they are together now LOVE YOU BOTH!

When we lived in NSW a lovely couple in a handmade caravan came to camp by our front gate. My girls made great friends with them and their horses They had coffee and scones on our front verandah every day of the week long visit it was a great experience.
